Gloxinia Flower Bulbs (Set of 5/10)

About this item

  • Gloxinias on display in the garden center are lovely and well worth the price, but frugal growers may want to try their hand at growing them from Bulbs. The roots are tender and the plant is not easy to transplant to a larger container when it is young, so start the Bulbs in a 6- to 8- inch (15 to 20 cm.) pot where it can grow to full size.
  • Gloxinia prefers temperatures similar to African violets and Streptocarpus. Ideal temperatures are between 70F-75F degrees during the day and 65F-70F degrees at night
  • Gloxinias grow best in a soil mixture of 50-per cent organic matter, such as peat moss, which is available at most garden center and nurseries.
  • Best Suitable for Terrace Gardening, Grow bag cultivation, Kitchen Gardening, Terrace Poly House Gardening & Roof Top Balcony Gardening

Gloxinias are beloved for their showy, bell-shaped flowers that come in a variety of vibrant colors. They’re usually grown from tubers or bulbs.

Here’s a guide on how to grow gloxinia bulbs:

Planting Gloxinia Bulbs:

  1. Selecting Bulbs:
    • Choose healthy gloxinia bulbs or tubers. Look for firm bulbs without signs of damage or rot.
  2. Timing:
    • Plant gloxinia bulbs indoors about 10 to 12 weeks before the last frost date in your area to enjoy summer blooms.
  3. Potting Mix and Containers:
    • Use a well-draining, high-quality potting mix for planting gloxinia bulbs. Select pots with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.
  4. Planting:
    • Place the bulbs horizontally on the surface of the potting mix. Cover them lightly with soil, leaving the top of the bulb exposed.
    • Space multiple bulbs a few inches apart in the container.
  5. Watering:
    • Water the planted bulbs gently to settle the soil. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely.
  6. Temperature and Care:
    • Place the containers in a warm, bright location with indirect sunlight. Protect them from direct harsh sunlight.
    • Maintain a temperature between 70-75°F (21-24°C) for optimal growth.
  7. Fertilization:
    • Once the gloxinias start growing, feed them regularly with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer according to the instructions on the package.
  8. Blooming and Care:
    • Gloxinias usually bloom in late spring to summer. Remove spent flowers to encourage new blooms.
    • Keep an eye out for pests like aphids or mealybugs and treat them if necessary.
  9. Post-Blooming Care:
    • After flowering, gradually reduce watering as the foliage starts to die back naturally. Allow the plant to enter dormancy.
    • Once the foliage has dried, lift the bulbs and store them in a cool, dry place until the next planting season.

Overwintering Gloxinia Bulbs:

  • In colder climates, store the bulbs during winter. Let the bulbs dry naturally, remove excess soil, and store them in a cool, dry place (around 50-55°F or 10-13°C).

Growing gloxinias from bulbs indoors allows you to enjoy their stunning blooms as houseplants. With proper care—using well-draining soil, adequate watering, indirect sunlight, and attention to post-blooming storage—you can cultivate the vibrant beauty of gloxinias in your home or garden.
